Ansys Lumerical FDTD
Ansys Lumerical FDTD - Enterprise Photonic Component Simulation Software
Ansys Lumerical FDTD is the finite-difference time-domain solver for nanophotonic device design. It simulates how light interacts with structures close to or smaller than its wavelength, where ray optics no longer gives an accurate answer.
Photonics researchers and device engineers use it for waveguides and couplers, metasurfaces, gratings, CMOS image sensor pixels and quantum photonic structures, from initial concept to a fabrication-ready design.
Ansys Lumerical FDTD 2026 R1
- Sentaurus TCAD-Lumerical FDTD workflow: load TCAD structures, simulate CMOS image sensor optics and export results to SDevice.
- GPU-accelerated FDTD: a broadband source and a volumetric current source now run on GPU.

Ansys Lumerical Enterprise
The full Lumerical suite: FDTD, MODE, INTERCONNECT, CML Compiler and the multiphysics solvers. Each job includes 4 CPU cores and 4 GPU SMs, and scales with Ansys HPC Packs.
Better suited to multi-GPU systems and HPC workflows.
Ansys Lumerical FDTD
A standalone FDTD licence with 32 CPU cores and 16 GPU SMs per job, scaling with additional FDTD or Lumerical Accelerator licences.
Broadband Time-Domain Solving and Inverse Design
FDTD solves Maxwell's equations directly in the time domain, so a single simulation returns broadband results across a range of wavelengths. Parameterised 3D objects, scripting and post-processing make rapid design iteration practical, and photonic inverse design optimises topology and shape automatically.
Photonic IC, Image Sensor, Metasurface and Quantum Applications
- Photonic integrated circuits: waveguides, couplers and other PIC components, characterised before fabrication.
- Image sensors: pixel optics, microlenses and colour filters, including back-side illumination and optical crosstalk.
- Metasurfaces and gratings: metalenses, diffraction gratings, plasmonic and photonic-crystal structures.
- Quantum photonics: single-photon devices and related nanostructures.
GPU-Accelerated FDTD Simulation
Large 3D simulations benefit most from GPU acceleration.
Common Photonics Consultation Topics
- Photonic components: waveguides, couplers and splitters for photonic ICs.
- Image sensor pixels: optical efficiency and crosstalk of CMOS pixels.
- Metasurfaces and gratings: metalens and grating design.
