Ansys FENSAP-ICE - Enterprise In-Flight Icing Simulation Software

Ansys FENSAP-ICE is in-flight icing simulation software. Ice accretion is extremely difficult to reproduce in physical testing, yet it must be understood for safety, performance and certification, and FENSAP-ICE covers all of its major aspects in one environment.

With no significant geometric limitations, it applies to aircraft, rotorcraft, UAVs, jet engines, nacelles, probes, detectors and other installed systems.

Ansys FENSAP-ICE 2025 R2
  • Full-aircraft multishot icing: detailed scallop ice shapes over entire wings and components, tested to 1,024 cores and 450 million cells.
  • 35% lower solver memory: FENSAP-ICE uses 35% less memory, so larger problems fit on the same hardware.
  • Parallel ice shedding solver (beta): a new Iterative - Parallel mode speeds up ice shedding on rotating components such as propellers.

Ansys CFD Enterprise

FENSAP-ICE is included in Ansys CFD Enterprise, together with Fluent, CFX and the other fluids solvers.

Ice Accretion, Supercooled Large Droplets and Ice Crystals

Calculate the shape and roughness of glaze, rime and mixed ice on surfaces from wings to air data probes, including supercooled large droplet and ice crystal conditions.

Ice Protection Systems and Conjugate Heat Transfer

Anti-icing and de-icing heat loads are evaluated with conjugate heat transfer, so ice protection systems can be sized and assessed before flight testing.

Aerodynamic Degradation and Certification Support

Assess lift and drag penalties, increased blockage of screens and engine passages, and other effects of ice; simulation supports the certification process alongside testing. Meshes come from CAD-based mesh generators and Fluent meshing, with anisotropic mesh optimisation through OptiGrid.

Common Icing Simulation Consultation Topics
  • Ice accretion shapes: predicted ice on wings, rotors, probes and engine inlets for given icing conditions.
  • Ice protection sizing: heat loads for thermal anti-icing and de-icing systems.
  • Performance penalties: lift, drag and blockage effects of ice.
  • Certification support: simulation evidence to accompany icing test programmes.
