Ansys Maxwell
Ansys Maxwell - Enterprise Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Field Solver
Ansys Maxwell is low-frequency electromagnetic simulation software for electric machines, transformers, wireless charging systems, actuators and permanent-magnet latches. It solves static, frequency-domain and time-varying fields, including the nonlinear transient motion of electromechanical devices.
Motor and power electronics engineers use Maxwell to evaluate designs in simulation rather than through wound prototypes, from initial sizing through to detailed loss analysis.
Ansys Maxwell 2026 R1
- 2D Magnetic Transient solver: new first-order elements run up to 3.5x faster, and up to 10x faster end to end.
- Electric machine efficiency: an improved SVPWM workflow with fully periodic drive excitation and waveform preview.
- Frequency-domain A-Phi solver: now commercial, for AC loss in transformers, inductors, PCBs and busbars, with GPU acceleration.

Torque, Loss and Magnet Modelling for Machines and Transformers
Maxwell calculates torque, back-EMF, cogging, efficiency maps, force and stroke. Its material models cover core loss, vector hysteresis, four-quadrant permanent-magnet behaviour and magnetostriction, which are the effects that decide efficiency, temperature and noise. RMxprt provides template-based machine set-up with automatic design sweeps across sizes, gaps and winding options.
Equivalent Circuits and State-Space Models for System Simulation
Maxwell can generate equivalent circuits and state-space models directly from field results, so detailed behaviour carries into system and control simulation. Losses and forces pass to thermal and structural analysis for multiphysics studies.

Ansys Maxwell FAQ
When is 3D needed instead of 2D?
2D is considerably faster and suits radial-flux motors and most transformers. 3D is used for end effects, axial-flux machines and complex three-dimensional geometry.
